Bands of rain crossing through the day, with an easy breeze from the SSW and steady pressure. Fish at Lac Rachel should hold close to the first drop-off and weed lines. A stay-home graph, with the evening as the one excuse to go. Scale down and fish slowly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Nord-du-Québec end of Quebec holds Lac Rachel. Elevation runs to 346 metres. Roughly 69 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. With about 4.2 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Start from Chapais, 41 km down the road. The nearest city of size is Saguenay, 338 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Nord-du-Québec cover Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. The near bank of Lac Rachel is often the one people ignore.
Between January at about -19°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. This far north the hard season runs and runs. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Plan any trip to Lac Rachel around it.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Lac Truchon, 3.3 km away. Nothing on Lac Rachel should be assumed from this page alone.
