Lac Protecto, Quebec: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  The Côte-Nord entry here is Lac Protecto, in Quebec. The country here is spruce and muskeg. This is sizeable water at about 4.36 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. The shoreline runs about 21 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. On our Côte-Nord list it sits near the top for size. Kuujjuaq is the closest town at 295 km. After that come Labrador City at 303 km and Wabush at 308 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.

• Where to Fish on Lac Protecto

  Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line.   Average temperature peaks around 12°C in July and bottoms out near -25°C in January. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. At Lac Protecto the season follows that pattern closely.

  We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement.
