A grey, even sky over the water, with a steady WNW wind with the glass holding level. On Lac Proche, work the seam between weed and open water first. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Lac Proche is a Quebec water. The ground round it is boreal forest. It measures about 23 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The whole outline is near 2.8 km, and most of it is walkable. It sits higher than most water we list in Quebec. Mistissini sits 148 km from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Pont Rouge (169 km) and Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc (171 km). This one is safely inside the county line.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Lac Proche the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Climate records put July near 15°C and January near -21°C. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid May. Averages suggest open water from about mid May through to roughly early November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Lac Proche runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Eugrave at 1.4 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Proche for certain.
