Soft grey light all day today, with a light chop building from the SSW with the glass holding level. The productive water at Lac Paul will be around inflow corners and shaded margins. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the morning. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Lac Paul is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean waters in Quebec. The ground around here is northern bush. The water covers some 15 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Bank access stretches around 1.7 km in total. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. Nearest town is Saint-Fulgence, 59 km off. After that come Saint-Honoré at 60 km and Chicoutimi at 69 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Lac Paul that means starting tight and working out.
Between January at about -18°C and July at about 15°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Look for the thaw near mid May; the fishing lifts straight after. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid May until roughly mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. At Lac Paul the season follows that pattern closely.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Buck, 1.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Ask locally about Lac Paul if anything is unclear.
