Soft grey light all day today, with a whisper of wind from the W and the barometer holding steady. Give the calm side of the wind the first hour at Lac Painchaud. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Lac Painchaud lies in Côte-Nord, in Quebec. It sits in taiga country. Surface area is around 47 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Around 3.6 km of margin, front to back. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. Forestville is the closest place, 68 km off. The big place round here is Saguenay, 116 km distant. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name logperch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Lac Painchaud the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -18°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. It holds true on Lac Painchaud more years than not.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Perch take small lures and worms fished near the bottom close to structure. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Petit lac du Chinook, 1.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm before you fish Lac Painchaud.
