Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with light air out of the W with the barometer flat. The water to cover at Lac Ox is inflow corners and shaded margins. A hard day on paper; the morning edges the rest. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Out in Lanaudière, Quebec, sits Lac Ox. The surface lies 313 metres up. Surface area is around 13 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The edge runs 1.7 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. For a base, Saint-Michel-des-Saints sits 36 km out. Trois-Rivières is the closest city, 96 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Records held for Lanaudière cover pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and rock bass. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lac Ox gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -15°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. That is the shape of the year on Lac Ox.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Lac du Leurre sits 2.7 km off and takes the overflow. Treat access at Lac Ox as something to verify.
