A closed sky with even light today, with just enough SW wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. Most of the action on Lac Ouagama should come off the shallows early and the drop later. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Lac Ouagama lies in Nord-du-Québec, in Quebec. It stands 257 metres above sea level. This is big water, about 15.67 sq km, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. You are looking at roughly 23 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. On our Nord-du-Québec list it sits near the top for size. 104 km away sits Matagami, the nearest town. Then Waswanipi, 121 km, and Waskaganish, 148 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Nord-du-Québec, recorded fish include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Work Lac Ouagama in sections rather than trying to cover it.
The year swings from about -19°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Expect Lac Ouagama to follow that timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Look for a notice board at the entrance. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Should this one be busy, Lac Chabinoche is 16 km off. For Lac Ouagama, the notice at the access point is the final word.
