Flat light and a covered sky today, with mild air moving in from the SSE and steady pressure. The fish at Lac Otapoco are likely to sit near inflow corners and shaded margins. A tough forecast; the evening offers the only real chance. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Quebec holds Lac Otapoco, in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. The water sits 471 metres up. The water covers around 7.38 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. Some 30 km of shoreline means conditions can differ from one end to the other. Size puts it in the front rank of our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list. Godefroy is the closest place, 212 km off. Then Chute-aux-Outardes, 214 km, and Hauterive, 215 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Lac Otapoco the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 15°C, while January sits near -21°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid May. Climate averages put the opening at about mid May and the closing near early November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. At Lac Otapoco the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. The nearest alternative is Lac du Raccourci, 10 km out. Ask locally about Lac Otapoco if anything is unclear.
