Solid cloud cover today, with a light SSW breeze and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at Lac Murphy is any hard bottom among the soft. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Lac Murphy sits in Outaouais, out in Quebec. It lies 386 metres above sea level. At some 1.48 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Some 7.3 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Few waters listed in Outaouais are bigger. The nearest place of any size is Deep River, 78 km away. Further out sit Chalk River (85 km) and Saint-Boniface (87 km). Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Outaouais cover pumpkinseed, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Read Lac Murphy for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in July and bottom out at -16°C in January. Hard water is a season in its own right here. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Murphy.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac McCaig, 2.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Lac Murphy, the notice at the access point is the final word.
