Overcast skies today, with light air out of the SW and the barometer holding steady. Expect most activity at Lac Motais around bays that hold the day's warmth. A tough forecast; the evening offers the only real chance. Save the long walk for a better forecast. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Lac Motais in the Nord-du-Québec part of Quebec. It stands 228 metres above sea level. Surface area runs to roughly 2.77 sq km, so plan for one area rather than the whole. The perimeter runs near 15 km, so plan the walk before you start. Ground here is low by Quebec standards. For a base, Waskaganish sits 87 km out. Matagami is 161 km away, with Waswanipi at 192 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Survey and observation records for Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Treat Lac Motais as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July to average close to 15°C, with January the cold end at about -19°C. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. The season on Lac Motais follows the weather closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Failing this one, try Lac Houre, 4.6 km away. Confirm before you fish Lac Motais.
