Passing showers with dry spells between, with dead-still conditions and no real change in pressure. Fish at Lac Moranger should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Laurentides, Quebec, is where Lac Moranger sits. The surface lies 494 metres up. The water covers some 20 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The full circuit measures close to 1.9 km on foot. Nearest place of any size is Rivière-Rouge, 38 km away. Further out sit Saint-Donat-de-Montcalm (44 km) and Labelle (44 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Laurentides cover pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brook trout and rock bass. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Lac Moranger the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Averages move between -15°C in January and 17°C in July. The ice season is long here and the open one short. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Moranger.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. If the gate is shut, Lac Froid at 2.5 km is the nearest alternative. Where Lac Moranger is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
