Solid cloud cover today, with a firm SSW blow and pressure going nowhere. On Lac Melin, work points where shallow meets deep first. The numbers single out the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Lac Melin in the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean part of Quebec. Around the bank it is taiga. Surface area runs to about 5 hectares — small enough to read in one session. Leblanc lies 70 km from the water. Normandin follows at 105 km, then Weymontachie at 106 km. Others close at hand: Lac Busliere at 1 km, Lac Merault sits 1.4 km out, Lac Bouvent at 1.5 km, Lac Frain sits 1.7 km out and Lac Combet at 2 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Species logged across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. At Lac Melin light and wind decide more than tackle does.
On the long-term average, July reads 16°C and January reads -18°C. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. On Lac Melin that shapes the whole year.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Busliere, 1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat access at Lac Melin as something to verify.
