A still, cloudless night on the water, with a decent WNW wind working the banks and pressure sitting still. Expect most activity at Lac McKnight around points where shallow meets deep. Little to get excited about, though the evening holds a sliver of promise. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Lac McKnight belongs to Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. It sits at 747 metres above sea level. Around 12 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 2.6 km on foot. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Quebec listings. Supplies mean a trip to Saint-Honoré, 36 km off. Saint-Fulgence follows at 41 km, then Saint-Ambroise at 46 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Lac McKnight the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Typical July readings run about 15°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. After mid May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Break-up near mid May, freeze-up near early November: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. That is the shape of the year on Lac McKnight.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Failing this one, try Lac Mustakis, 0.9 km away. Treat Lac McKnight as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
