A wide-open sky and strong sun today, with dead-still conditions and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Lac McGill should be near the calm side of the wind. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Lac McGill is one of the Lanaudière waters in Quebec. The bank is 181 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 31 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. There is roughly 4.8 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. It ranks high for size among our Lanaudière listings. Sainte-Julienne at 3.3 km is the nearest place to stop. Further out sit Lac-Lapierre (8.2 km) and Rawdon (9.4 km). It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Fish documented in Lanaudière include pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. At Lac McGill the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Average temperature peaks around 19°C in July and bottoms out near -12°C in January. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly early December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. On Lac McGill that shapes the whole year.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is somewhere to leave the car, 270 m off. Beauréal Réserve Naturelle covers this ground, which means extra rules to check. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Lac a Moisan is 1 km distant. Nothing on Lac McGill should be assumed from this page alone.
