A grey, even sky over the water, with air barely moving and steady pressure. Lac Marsal should fish best around the weed line and any gaps in it today. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Nord-du-Québec end of Quebec holds Lac Marsal. It lies 409 metres above sea level. The water measures roughly 4 hectares, so nothing here is far from anything else. It is a small entry by Nord-du-Québec standards. Chibougamau is the closest place, 51 km off. Further out sit Chapais (66 km) and Mistissini (102 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records hold no depth for this water. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Nord-du-Québec records list Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Read Lac Marsal before you fish it and the day goes better.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Climate averages put the opening at about early May and the closing near mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. On Lac Marsal that shapes the whole year.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. If the gate is shut, Lac Bellot at 1.3 km is the nearest alternative. Confirm access to Lac Marsal locally before you travel.
