An even grey lid over the water, with barely a breath of wind with a settled glass. The water to cover at Lac Macreuse is the first drop-off and weed lines. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lac Macreuse is one of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue waters in Quebec. The surface lies 336 metres up. At about 26 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 2.5 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Notre-Dame-du-Lac at 73 km is the nearest place to stop. Témiscaming is 78 km and Saint-Isidore 83 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Public occurrence data for Abitibi-Témiscamingue names northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Lac Macreuse gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Climate records put July near 18°C and January near -15°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. On Lac Macreuse the same rules apply, with local timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac Tripale sits 1.4 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm before you fish Lac Macreuse.
