Flat light and a covered sky today, with a kind SSW breeze on the water and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Lac Long should come off the calm side of the wind. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Long is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean listings for Quebec. Around the bank it is boreal forest. It measures about 15 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Around 2.1 km of margin, front to back. Pont Rouge lies 75 km from the water. Then Dolbeau-Mistassini, 76 km, and Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, 77 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records hold no depth for this water. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Lac Long the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warm month here averages 16°C; the cold one sits at -19°C. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Lac Long runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Lac du Marteau at 1.5 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Lac Long before loading the car.
