An even grey lid over the water, with a light SSE breeze with the glass holding level. On Lac Larive, work bays that hold the day's warmth first. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cold air keeps the water sluggish; scale everything down.

Lac Larive is a Nord-du-Québec water, in Quebec. This is taiga country. It covers about 13.44 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. The outline measures near 81 km, so a boat opens up water the bank never reaches. Size puts it in the front rank of our Nord-du-Québec list. The closest town, Fermont, is 224 km distant. For a city, Saguenay is 583 km off. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Nord-du-Québec: Arctic charr, brook trout and lake trout. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. At Lac Larive the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Between January at about -24°C and July at about 14°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. The lid usually goes in late May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Averages suggest open water from about late May through to roughly late October. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. At Lac Larive the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac Bordier at 6.6 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Lac Larive before loading the car.
