Showers crossing the water today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the S and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Lac John should come off the seam between weed and open water. Save your energy for the morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac John is set in Lanaudière, Quebec. It sits in lake country bush country. Around 35 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Bank access stretches around 3.6 km in total. Few waters listed in Lanaudière are bigger. Nearest town is Saint-Donat-de-Montcalm, 26 km off. It is 80 km to Saint-Louis-de-Terrebonne, the nearest city. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no depth figure for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Lanaudière records list pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass and yellow perch among the fish reported. The county list is broader than any single water. Lac John gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -14°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. It holds true on Lac John more years than not.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. The nearest alternative is Lac Long, 1.3 km out. Confirm access to Lac John locally before you travel.
