Rain moving through today, with a kind SSW breeze on the water with the glass holding level. Lac Jess should fish best around the shallows early and the drop later today. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

The Outaouais end of Quebec holds Lac Jess. Around the bank it is mixed forest. Surface area runs to about 6 hectares — small enough to read in one session. Start from Saint-Boniface, 64 km down the road. Then Maniwaki, 70 km, and Saint-Raphaël, 74 km. More in the same country: Lac Muir a shade over 1.5 km, Lac Vail 2.7 km off, Lac Lydia a shade over 3.6 km, Lac Dot 3.6 km off and Lac Susa a shade over 3.6 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow smelt. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Treat Lac Jess as a water to read rather than to cover.
The seasonal spread runs -16°C to 18°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. The lid tends to go about late April and return around late November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Lac Jess runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Should this one be busy, Lac Muir is 1.5 km off. None of that is settled for Lac Jess in what we hold.
