An even grey lid over the water, with a soft S wind and pressure sitting still. On Lac Janis, work the shallows early and the drop later first. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Janis falls in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, part of Quebec. The bank is 369 metres above sea level. At roughly 6 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. For supplies, Normandin is 88 km out. Then Albanel, 91 km, and Chibougamau, 102 km. Neighbouring water: Lac Turgeon near enough 0.4 km, Lac Bedard 1.1 km, Lac Gabriel-Fleury near enough 1.6 km, Lac du Grand Duc 1.7 km and Lac Aristee near enough 2.4 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Public occurrence data for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean names northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Lac Janis fishes better once you know its edges.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -18°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That shapes the year on Lac Janis.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Should this one be busy, Lac Turgeon is 0.4 km off. Confirm before you fish Lac Janis.
