Fresh rain topping the water up today, with a gentle ripple from the S with a settled glass. Fish at Lac Hetu should hold close to the calm side of the wind. The numbers single out the morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Lanaudière entry here is Lac Hetu, in Quebec. It lies 408 metres above sea level. The water covers some 22 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. With about 2.2 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. For a base, Sainte-Béatrix sits 27 km out. For a city, Saint-Louis-de-Terrebonne is 75 km off. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Reported across Lanaudière: pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass and brook trout. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Lac Hetu that means starting tight and working out.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in July and bottom out at -14°C in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Lac Hetu fishes to that pattern most years.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Lac Nellan is 0.6 km off. Where Lac Hetu is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
