Soft grey light all day today, with an easy breeze from the SW and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Lac Gris along the calm side of the wind. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, this is Lac Gris. It sits at 360 metres above sea level. Around 24 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 2.8 km on foot. Start from Senneterre, 80 km down the road. Then Val-d'Or, 87 km, and Barraute, 101 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Reported across Abitibi-Témiscamingue: northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Lac Gris fishes better once you know its edges.
Seasonal averages run from -17°C in January up to 17°C in July. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Lac Gris fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lac Bimbo sits 1.3 km off and takes the overflow. The position on Lac Gris is worth confirming on the day.
