Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with barely a breath of wind with a settled glass. The productive water at Lac Grant will be around the weed line and any gaps in it. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient.

The Abitibi-Témiscamingue end of Quebec holds Lac Grant. The water sits 311 metres up. It measures about 57 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Some 5.1 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. It ranks high for size among our Abitibi-Témiscamingue listings. The town to know is Notre-Dame-du-Lac, 52 km out. Greater Sudbury sits 201 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Abitibi-Témiscamingue cover northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Lac Grant fishes better once you know its edges.
The year swings from about -15°C in January to roughly 18°C in July. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. On Lac Grant that shapes the whole year.
No access rule appears in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Should this one be busy, Lac Palette is 1.1 km off. Check the position at Lac Grant before loading the car.
