Dull, settled light over the water, with a soft WSW wind with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Lac Gilles around reed fringes and open pockets. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today.

Lac Gilles is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean listings for Quebec. It lies 715 metres above sea level. It measures about 14 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 2.7 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. It is high ground by Quebec standards. Saint-Honoré at 44 km is the nearest place to stop. Saint-Fulgence follows at 46 km, then Chicoutimi at 54 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish among the fish reported. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Lac Gilles fishes better once you know its edges.
Typical July readings run about 15°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid May. Break-up near mid May, freeze-up near early November: that is the shape of an average year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan any trip to Lac Gilles around it.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac du Zenith sits 1.5 km off and takes the overflow. For Lac Gilles, the notice at the access point is the final word.
