Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with calm air over the water and pressure going nowhere. Whatever swims in Lac Gilles should be near any hard bottom among the soft. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac Gilles belongs to Laurentides, Quebec. Height above sea level is 422 metres. It measures about 10 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. There is roughly 1.6 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Nearest town is Ferme-Neuve, 57 km off. Manawan lies 67 km off, Mont-Laurier another 74 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Laurentides list pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lac Gilles gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -16°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. Break-up sits around early May on average, with the water closing again about mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Gilles.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac Vastel at 1.9 km is the sensible second choice. For Lac Gilles, the notice at the access point is the final word.
