A closed sky with even light today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Lac Gilles should come off the seam between weed and open water. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Lac Gilles is an Abitibi-Témiscamingue water, in Quebec. The surface lies 392 metres up. At 1.28 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. The margin runs to about 20 km in total. Size puts it in the front rank of our Abitibi-Témiscamingue list. Lebel-sur-Quévillon is the closest town at 68 km. After that come Senneterre at 82 km and Barraute at 107 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Abitibi-Témiscamingue cover northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Lac Gilles rewards a slow walk along one bank.
The warmest month averages 16°C, the coldest about -19°C. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. At Lac Gilles the season follows that pattern closely.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. The nearest alternative is Lac Clavet, 3.3 km out. What applies at Lac Gilles may have changed since it was mapped.
