A grey, even sky over the water, with almost no wind to speak of with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Lac Gauthier is the shallows early and the drop later. If you pick one session, make it the morning. Let the water tell you when to move. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Gauthier is one of the Mauricie waters in Quebec. The water sits 330 metres up. Around 30 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The outline measures near 5.1 km, so local knowledge counts. Supplies mean a trip to La Tuque, 20 km off. Laurentides lies 30 km off, Sainte-Thècle another 54 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Survey and observation records for Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout and walleye. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The near bank of Lac Gauthier is often the one people ignore.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The water is typically free of ice between late April and late November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Plan around that when you fish Lac Gauthier.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Lac Boston at 1.4 km is the nearest alternative. What applies at Lac Gauthier may have changed since it was mapped.
