A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WSW and pressure sitting still. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Lac Frenette. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are.

Mauricie, Quebec, is where Lac Frenette sits. The ground round it is northern bush. The water covers some 17 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. With about 2.5 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Head to Manawan, 48 km away, for anything you forgot. Weymontachie follows at 55 km, then Leblanc at 68 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Species logged across Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout and walleye. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. The shape of Lac Frenette decides where the fish sit.
Climate normals give 16°C for July and -17°C for January. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. The season between ice runs from about early May to mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Frenette.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. For a change of water, Lac Buisson is 1.3 km distant. Confirm before you fish Lac Frenette.
