Dull, settled light over the water, with a soft SSW wind and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Lac Fortin should be near the margins and the shelf beyond them. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lac Fortin is an Outaouais water, in Quebec. The setting is lake country bush on every side. It runs to roughly 12 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline comes to about 1.6 km, small enough to learn in a day. It is low-lying compared with other Quebec water we list. The town to know is Saint-Raphaël, 11 km out. Beyond it, Maniwaki at 24 km and Saint-Boniface at 36 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch and smallmouth bass. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Fish Lac Fortin to its features, not to its size.
Seasonal averages run from -14°C in January up to 19°C in July. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Lac Fortin runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. You will be walking about 650 m from the nearest car park. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac chez Medee, 0.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Lac Fortin is worth confirming on the day.
