Flat light and a covered sky today, with air barely moving with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Lac Fan should come off the shallows early and the drop later. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Lac Fan lies in Mauricie, in Quebec. The surroundings are taiga. It runs to roughly 14 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 2.3 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Some 110 km away sits Manawan, the nearest settlement. Then Ferme-Neuve, 112 km, and Leblanc, 117 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Lac Fan responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -17°C. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Lac Fan fishes to that pattern most years.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Failing this one, try Lac Yorick, 1.4 km away. None of that is settled for Lac Fan in what we hold.
