Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with almost no wind to speak of with a settled glass. On Lac Ethel, work the seam between weed and open water first. Make the morning the heart of the trip. Ride the conditions while they last. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Lac Ethel is one of the Mauricie listings for Quebec. It sits at 453 metres above sea level. At about 63 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Some 5.8 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. It is among the larger waters listed here for Mauricie. Nearest place of any size is La Tuque, 56 km away. Then Saint-Michel-des-Saints, 64 km, and Sainte-Thècle, 72 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Our records hold no depth for this water. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Mauricie records list northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Lac Ethel gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect July near 17°C and January near -16°C on the long-run figures. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Time your trip to Lac Ethel by conditions rather than dates.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Lac Fort at 1.3 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm before you fish Lac Ethel.
