Soft grey light all day today, with a persistent wind from the SSW with the barometer flat. The water to cover at Lac Duverger is the calm side of the wind. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Lac Duverger in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. The ground around here is boreal forest. Surface area is around 15 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. With about 2.5 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Leblanc is the closest place, 79 km off. Normandin follows at 104 km, then Albanel at 109 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Take Lac Duverger a stretch at a time.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -18°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Duverger.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Lac Tavanelle at 1.3 km is the nearest alternative. Where Lac Duverger is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
