An even grey lid over the water, with a mirror surface most of the day with the barometer flat. On Lac Ducheneau, work the shaded margin through bright spells first. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Quebec holds Lac Ducheneau, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. The surface lies 401 metres up. It runs to roughly 19 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline comes to about 2.7 km, small enough to learn in a day. Senneterre sits 48 km from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Lebel-sur-Quévillon (76 km) and Barraute (76 km). It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Open biodiversity records for Abitibi-Témiscamingue list northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. At Lac Ducheneau light and wind decide more than tackle does.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -18°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Plan around that when you fish Lac Ducheneau.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Lac Wilbrod is 2.1 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Ducheneau for certain.
