Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a firm SSW blow and pressure going nowhere. Expect most activity at Lac du Portage around sheltered bays and points. The night is where the day comes good. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac du Portage lies in Mauricie, in Quebec. What surrounds it is taiga. At roughly 8 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. Start from Manawan, 58 km down the road. Weymontachie lies 60 km off, Leblanc another 61 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Mauricie records list northern pike, brook trout and walleye among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. At Lac du Portage light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -17°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. That shapes the year on Lac du Portage.
We hold no note on access for this one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Should this one be busy, Lac Hull is 1.4 km off. Rules at Lac du Portage are worth checking on the day.
