A closed sky with even light today, with a faint SSW drift with a settled glass. On Lac du Merle, work the shallows early and the drop later first. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac du Merle is a Laurentides water, in Quebec. Elevation runs to 382 metres. The water covers some 10 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. With about 2.2 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Nearest town is Ferme-Neuve, 67 km off. After that come Saint-Boniface at 72 km and Mont-Laurier at 78 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Laurentides cover pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and brook trout. The county list is broader than any single water. Lac du Merle responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -17°C at the bottom of winter. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. Averages place the thaw at early May and the freeze at late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. On Lac du Merle that shapes the whole year.
No access rule appears in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Grimes sits 3.9 km off and takes the overflow. Nothing here settles the position at Lac du Merle for certain.
