A closed sky with even light today, with hardly a ripple anywhere and steady pressure. On Lac des Smilacines, work the margins and the shelf beyond them first. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Abitibi-Témiscamingue in Quebec is where Lac des Smilacines sits. The ground around here is pine and birch. At roughly 7 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Notre-Dame-du-Lac at 34 km is the nearest place to stop. Then Témiscaming, 39 km, and Ville-Marie, 70 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Abitibi-Témiscamingue, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. At Lac des Smilacines the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Long-run averages give July about 18°C and January about -15°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about late November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Lac des Smilacines.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Lac des Cassandres, 0.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Lac des Smilacines for certain.
