Solid cloud cover today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the SW and the barometer holding steady. Expect most activity at Lac des Huttes de Castor around inflow corners and shaded margins. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand.

Lac des Huttes de Castor is one of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue waters in Quebec. Elevation runs to 371 metres. At roughly 6 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Our Abitibi-Témiscamingue list holds plenty of bigger water. Senneterre is the closest place, 91 km off. After that come Val-d'Or at 114 km and Barraute at 117 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lac des Huttes de Castor fishes better once you know its edges.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. The open-water window runs from around early May to about mid November in an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac des Huttes de Castor.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Lac aux Matteucies is 1 km distant. Nothing on Lac des Huttes de Castor should be assumed from this page alone.
