Fresh rain topping the water up today, with a useful SSW wind pushing food about and pressure sitting still. Expect most activity at Lac des Amarantes around structure within a cast of the bank. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean end of Quebec holds Lac des Amarantes. It stands 466 metres above sea level. The water covers some 26 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Bank access stretches around 3.5 km in total. Leblanc sits 76 km from here and is the nearest stop. Chapais is 107 km away, with Chibougamau at 110 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Survey and observation records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Lac des Amarantes decides where the fish sit.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -18°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. It holds true on Lac des Amarantes more years than not.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Lac Medis is 0.9 km off. Where Lac des Amarantes is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
