An even grey lid over the water, with a gentle ripple from the S and steady pressure. Activity on Lac de l'Esker should centre on sheltered bays and points. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean end of Quebec holds Lac de l'Esker. The ground around here is spruce and muskeg. This is a pocket water of some 3 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. Labrecque sits 36 km from the bank. It is 53 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean cover northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Lac de l'Esker repays a walk before the first cast.
Climate records put July near 16°C and January near -18°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac de l'Esker.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Lac Culotte, 0.4 km out. The position on Lac de l'Esker is worth confirming on the day.
