A grey, even sky over the water, with next to no ripple and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Lac de la Surprise is windblown banks where food collects. A stay-home graph, with the evening as the one excuse to go. Scale down and fish slowly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Records held for Abitibi-Témiscamingue cover northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. The warmest month averages 17°C, the coldest about -17°C. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Anyone fishing Lac de la Surprise regularly works to that calendar.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Mapping shows a jetty some 1.4 km off. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Lac Wyeth sits 1.7 km off and takes the overflow. The position on Lac de la Surprise is worth confirming on the day.
