Soft grey light all day today, with an easy breeze from the S with the barometer flat. Activity on Lac de la Moelle should centre on shallow cover and weed edges. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

In Quebec, Lac de la Moelle falls inside Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. Height above sea level is 420 metres. Small at around 3 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. Our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list holds plenty of bigger water. Labrecque is the closest place, 57 km off. It is 86 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, recorded fish include northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Lac de la Moelle gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -19°C in January. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Lac de la Moelle runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Troisieme lac Gravel, 0.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Lac de la Moelle, the notice at the access point is the final word.
