A closed sky with even light today, with stillness over the whole water and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Lac de la Massue should come off the seam between weed and open water. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient.

The Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean end of Quebec holds Lac de la Massue. The surroundings are spruce and muskeg. At roughly 4 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list holds plenty of bigger water. Start from Saint-Honoré, 42 km down the road. Beyond it, Saint-Fulgence at 46 km and Saint-Ambroise at 51 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean cover northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Read Lac de la Massue for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Long-run averages give July about 15°C and January about -19°C. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Ice-out usually falls in mid May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Break-up near mid May, freeze-up near early November: that is the shape of an average year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. On Lac de la Massue that shapes the whole year.
The access position is unclear from public sources. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Failing this one, try Lac de l'Ancien, 0.4 km away. Nothing on Lac de la Massue should be assumed from this page alone.
