A grey, even sky over the water, with next to no ripple with a settled glass. Give shallow cover and weed edges the first hour at Lac Dan. Quiet conditions all day, with the evening marginally better. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Dan is one of the Côte-Nord waters in Quebec. Around the bank it is northern bush. At 3 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. It is a small entry by Côte-Nord standards. The closest town, Forestville, is 51 km distant. Saguenay sits 148 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Reported across Côte-Nord: logperch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Lac Dan gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -18°C. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Lac Dan runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the perch, a small jig tipped with worm, dropped along the edges, is hard to beat. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Failing this one, try Lac Laurendeau, 1.4 km away. Where Lac Dan is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
