A grey, even sky over the water, with mild air moving in from the S and no real change in pressure. Give the calm side of the wind the first hour at Lac Clairval. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Clairval sits in Mauricie, out in Quebec. Height above sea level is 349 metres. With some 23 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 3.1 km of margin, front to back. La Tuque sits 41 km from the bank. Sainte-Thècle is 59 km and Saint-Tite 61 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Mauricie records list northern pike, brook trout and walleye among the fish reported. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. At Lac Clairval the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 18°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at late November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. It holds true on Lac Clairval more years than not.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lac a la Pluie, 1.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position at Lac Clairval before loading the car.
