Dull, settled light over the water, with mild air moving in from the SSW with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Lac Clair should come off inflow corners and shaded margins. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Lac Clair sits within Lanaudière in Quebec. It lies 480 metres above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 6 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. For supplies, Saint-Michel-des-Saints is 13 km out. Saint-Donat-de-Montcalm lies 45 km off, Manawan another 61 km. Within a short drive: Petit lac Collin 1.1 km off, Lac Collin roughly 1.4 km, Lac Liliane 1.8 km off, Lac Lozeau roughly 1.9 km and Lac Vert 2.6 km off. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Lanaudière include pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and rock bass. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Anyone new to Lac Clair should walk it once before setting up.
In an average year July sits at 17°C and January at -15°C. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Clair.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. The nearest alternative is Petit lac Collin, 1.1 km out. For Lac Clair, the notice at the access point is the final word.
