Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a soft SSW wind and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at Lac Chinuses is the shaded margin through bright spells. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Quebec holds Lac Chinuses, in Nord-du-Québec. The bank is 168 metres above sea level. At some 3.14 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The shoreline runs about 7.7 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. Ground here is low by Quebec standards. Start from Waskaganish, 147 km down the road. Saguenay is the closest city, 638 km away. This one is safely inside the county line.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. The shape of Lac Chinuses rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Average temperature peaks around 16°C in July and bottoms out near -21°C in January. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid May. In an average year the thaw lands around mid May and the freeze near mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Chinuses.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Lac Duxbury at 9.5 km is the sensible second choice. Confirm before you fish Lac Chinuses.
