Soft grey light all day today, with a busy WSW wind on the open water and pressure going nowhere. Expect most activity at Lac Champion around the margins and the shelf beyond them. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Champion is one of the Nord-du-Québec waters in Quebec. The water sits 221 metres up. Around 22.50 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. Around 51 km of margin, so directions matter more than a general plan. Size puts it in the front rank of our Nord-du-Québec list. Waskaganish at 172 km is the nearest place to stop. For a city, Saguenay is 518 km off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Fish documented in Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout and lake trout. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. The near bank of Lac Champion is often the one people ignore.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -20°C in January. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid May. Ice clears near mid May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Lac Champion fishes to that pattern most years.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac Kachikakushwanahikanuch, 6.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. What applies at Lac Champion may have changed since it was mapped.
