Flat light and a covered sky today, with a soft SSW wind and steady pressure. Most of the action on Lac Castor should come off any hard bottom among the soft. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Castor falls in Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine, part of Quebec. The bank gives way to rolling bush. At roughly 4 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. For supplies, Sainte-Anne-des-Monts is 69 km out. Then Cap-Chat, 83 km, and Gaspé, 88 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Public occurrence data for Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine names American eel, striped bass and alewife. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. On Lac Castor a short move beats a long cast.
Average temperature peaks around 16°C in July and bottoms out near -13°C in January. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Lac Castor fishes to that pattern most years.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Fishing from a pier is possible 40 m away. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Failing this one, try Petit lac a Foin, 0.3 km away.
