Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a soft S wind with the barometer flat. Give any hard bottom among the soft the first hour at Lac Castor. The strongest window is the morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

In Quebec, Lac Castor falls inside Mauricie. The bank gives way to lake country bush. It measures about 10 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Quebec listings. Start from Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, 8.4 km down the road. The big place round here is Trois-Rivières, 42 km distant. No border sits close enough to matter.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Survey and observation records for Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. At Lac Castor the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July runs about 19°C on average, January about -14°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Lac Castor runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. There is recorded parking some 240 m off. Overnight stays are possible 260 m away. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Lac Chassis is 1.2 km off. For Lac Castor in particular, ask before you travel.
